How Long Do Shingles Roofing Last?

The right shingles will make a big difference in how long your home can stay safe and all of the items inside the home will stay dry and not get ruined. There are different shingles that you are able to choose from based on what will look the best and the type that you like the most based on your budget. But how long do shingles last on your home?

The type of shingles on your roof will determine how long they can last. Asphalt shingles can last between 15 to 30 years while composite shingles can last up to 50 years if they are maintained well. If you use modified rubber shingles, they will frequently last for 30 years.

This makes them a good choice to choose because they look nice and will stay on your roof for a long time, says local roofers in CT, The Connecticut Roofers.

The shingles on your roof are an important part of your home and can keep everything safe. Knowing how long the shingles are meant to last and when to replace them can make a world of difference in how safe your home and belongings will stay.

How Long Do Shingles Roofing Last?

Since there are different types of shingles that you are able to choose from for your home, the answer to this will vary. If you are going for asphalt shingles, which are a popular option for many homeowners, you can expect them to last for 15 to 30 years. These are often the shingles that will last the least amount of time out of all the options out there.

You can also use composite shingles for your home and the modified rubber shingles will be good options as well. If you are working with composite shingles, these can last between 20 to 50 years based on how much care and maintenance that the homeowner gives to them. And when it comes to modified rubber shingles, these will often last for up to 30 years.

Some homeowners will also work with wood shingles. These can be a sturdy option for your home and will last a long time. These can make it for 30 to 40 years if you take good care of them and pay attention to any damage that is going to happen on the roof.

These shingles are an attractive option, but they do not last as long as some of the other options that are available. Some options like clay tiles, concrete tiles, and metal roofs will last for up to 50 years. If you go with a copper roof, this can last for 60 years or more. However, these roofs are not as attractive to work with compared to the shingles so most homeowners will not choose them.

How to Make My Roof Last Longer?

Since it costs a lot of money to replace your roof, many homeowners are looking for ways to make the roof last a little longer. Outside of choosing the right shingle type for your home based on aesthetics and budget price, there are a few steps that you can choose to help your shingles last a little bit longer. These include:

  1. Maintain the area that is near your roof. You can clean out the gutters to prevent water from pooling and trim the nearby branches so leaves will not get stuck and cause damage to the home.
  2. Try to keep the foot traffic on the roof and only get up there when you need to. Avoid power washing the roof because this can dislodge some of the granules that protect the roof as well.
  3. Try to ventilate and insulate the attic. When the air flows well, it is harder for humidity and heat to build up in the roof. When heat and humidity happen, it can cause the asphalt to dry out faster.
  4. Get an inspection done every year or two. This will help you find the issues and get them fixed before they turn into big expenses. Get this done after a big storm as well.

At some point, you will need to replace the roof because it will finally wear out. But when you take some of the steps above, you will be able to help the roof last a little bit longer and can save yourself a lot of money in the process.

Taking Care of Your Roof

The biggest determinant to how long the shingles on your home will last will depend on how well you take care of the roof. When you notice that there is an issue with the roof or that has some damage, it is important to get it fixed as soon as possible. This will help the roof to last for longer and can make it easier to protect your whole home for longer too.
