Free neighbourhood maps for youngsters

Ordnance Survey is giving away 'Free Maps for 11 year-olds' to encourage children to get out and discover their neighbourhoods.

Every Year 7 pupil in England, Scotland and Wales can receive a free 1:25000 scale OS Explorer Map of their local area.

Ordnance Survey has distributed nearly 5m maps to pupils through their schools since the scheme started in 2002. The youngsters also receive a copy of the leaflet "Map reading made easy peasy".

Ordnance Survey Minister Iain Wright said: "With sat nav becoming increasingly common, this scheme encourages children to learn geography in their own backyard and develop that all-important sense of direction"

Has your child or grandchild received their free map? Speak to your school to see if they are participating in the scheme. Teachers should place their order for maps by 30 November 2008 on the Ordnance Survey free maps website here.

There's also an Ordnance Survey website designed for children which includes interactive games – to view it, click here.
